There are 4 types of bullying: Verbal, Social, Physical, and Cyber

1. Verbal Bullying: Communicating mean things via speech or writing. Verbal bullying often starts “small” and escalates.

Examples:

• Teasing
• Name-calling
• Inappropriate sexual comments
• Taunting
• Threatening to cause harm
• Homophobic sexist or racist remarks
• Intimidation

2. Social bullying: Hurting someone’s social or public standing or relationships with others. This is sometimes called “covert bullying” because it is sometimes harder to recognize and can be done without the bullied youth’s awareness.

Examples:

• Not including someone on purpose; marginalizing or ostracizing
• Criticizing someone as not friendship material
• Generating or perpetuating rumors or lies about the person
• Deriding someone in public; damaging a person’s reputation or acceptance with others
• Embarrassing or humiliating someone, sometimes by nasty jokes
• Mimicking in a cruel way

3. Physical bullying: Hurting someone’s body or possessions.

Examples:

• Hitting, pinching, punching, scratching, or kicking
• Shoving, pushing or tripping
• Spitting or smearing body fluids
• Damaging or stealing someone’s things
• Using mean hand or body gestures

4. Cyber bullying: Hurting someone using the web, online gaming or cell

Examples:

• Hurtful texts, messages, emails, images or videos
• Ostracizing or excluding someone online
• Ridiculing someone using cyber resources
• Spreading gossip or unflattering information
• Imitating or pretending to be someone online, using their pages or sites without permission
• Sending sexts (or sexual images) of the victim or others
• Telling the target to harm her or himself, including encouraging suicide
